EVERYONE OF US HAS AN UNIQUE STORY
Not all of us think our story is worth telling
Some of us fear clumsy writing
will make us look stupid
Or a good writer fears writing about your own life
will be boring or embarrassing
All humans want to tell their stories to others
(even if we don't admit it)
If we want to see our stories on the screen and discussed truthfully in the houses of government
we need to be the storytellers
Provides New Tools & Outlook
We'll help you to do a small guided assignment at your own pace. The end task will be to write a short real life story about yourself (a.k.a. memoir), that can be posted on this Catering2Us site.
(Short means short -- it can be just a couple of paragraphs and no more than (2) typed pages or (6000) characters w/spaces)
More than about writing, this assignment is about the journey towards understanding what you want to write and why, and then having the knowhow and support to express yourself clearly and vividly.

WHO CAN SUBMIT
Anyone who has ever been an hourly wage earner, a freelance contract worker, or a salary earner who'd make more if paid hourly for their work. You can be from any industry or discipline.
TAKE A FREE NO-WRITING WORKSHOP !
'Focusing On An Idea & Writing Tips' is an intimate hour long zoom workshop limited to just (3) participants. We’ll start by doing exercises to help each individual pick one strong memory. (You'll pick a memory only for the purposes of the workshop and do not have to later write about it.)
Then you’ll learn '(11) Memoir Writing Tips' and how to do ‘pre-writing’, the brainstorming, research, and critical thought that goes into readying your idea to write it.
NOTE: In exchange for the free workshop participants agree to give recorded and written feedback on the effectiveness of the workshop.
You can submit a memoir without taking the workshop but only coherent and thoughtful
memoirs will be posted.
Catering2Us has (9) story themes, fitting under the (3) broader categories of WORK, CULTURE, and LIFE. Pick the theme your story idea best fits under.
HOMEWORK: Read the sample memoir on that story theme page and use the '(11) Memoir Writing Tips' you learned in the workshop to analyze the structure of the story. Then read the essay on the story theme page as a springboard to help you develop your idea.
1) POSITIVE ORIENTATION
You most definitely can speak to problems and obstacles you have encountered, or the disparity in wealth and resources you have experienced, but be specific about how you were impacted, how you coped with the situation, and lessons learned. (No company you have complaints against should be named).
2) HOW YOU TELL IT
Even if your memoir is just a paragraph long -- make it vivid and puts images into the minds of readers. Spend significant time pre-writing or jotting down ideas so you don't get tangled up in the writing before you even know what you want to write. Ask yourself the questions a reporter asks to better focus the writing of her story. List descriptions of the people, the environment, or even the weather, and set the scene like a movie in your head before you start writing the story.
3) TREAT YOURSELF LIKE
Okay, yes, it can be very strange and lonely, staring at paper or screen. Writers sometimes do weird things to get into the 'zone'. Check out (11) Weird Writer Habits
(it's both funny and inspirational).
Fill out the form and outline the idea for the real life story you want to share as well as indicate which Catering2Us story theme it best fits under. We'll respond back with words of encouragement, ask any questions we might have, and answer any questions you might have.
IMAGES: If you are a visual artist you can create a memoir that combines written words with your original image(s).
REMINDER: Make sure your story idea describes the specific situation you are shaping your short memoir around. Finished memoirs can be no more than (2) typed pages or (6000) characters w/spaces. If you can’t describe the key details of what happens in your story in a few lines --- will you be able to write it in just two pages?
ONCE YOUR STORY IDEA IS ACCEPTED
(1) DRAFT ALLOWED FOR FEEDBACK
If you become confused as you write, you are allow to submit (1) rough draft for feedback and suggestions to help you finish it. The rough draft can be as long as (4) typed pages or (12000) characters w/spaces, understanding that the final version will have to be edited down to the limit of (2) pages or (6000) characters.
When you submit your finished version, we will proof it for typos or confusing passages and offer suggestions for how to make it more engaging (if we have any). You will do the final edit and then re-submit it.
IMAGE & TITLE FOR MEMOIR
You are encouraged to come up with a title for your memoir and supply a photo, original artwork (you don't have to be a great artist to make a fun collage or cartoon-like drawing), or even a short video to go with your story. If you don't include a title or image with your story, we will create a title and image.
HOW YOUR MEMOIR WILL BE SHOWCASED
Your memoir will go up as a post on our site blog, and then listed (with your title, name*, image, opening lines, and link) on the story theme page it falls under. An excerpt from it will be included in the Catering2Us monthly newsletter, and on social media posts.
(*You can choose to be known publicly by just your first name)
By submitting your story you are granting us rights to publish your story and use it in promotional materials to help publicize the Catering2Us project. You though retain all other rights and can reuse your story as you wish.
(Maybe your short memoir will inspire you to write a longer version!)
